How to choose a good domain name

A: This is one of the most asked questions around. One of the first things you need to ask yourself is, what do I want people to associate with my website? Do you want people to think of you or your business or what you are offering? Do that helps people remember your domain name. When you associate your domain name with you company name i.e.: myhappycompany.com, people often remember that name if it is the same as your business name. But what if your company name is taken already? Then you might want to make a domain name that has something to do with your name or a product or service you offer. One thing that really gets people stuck today is that they days of the simple domain names are all but gone. And most of the .com's are also not going to be available. So you have to be creative and the best way to do that is to really think about it. Write a few ideas of names that you like and start to combine them into several possible domains names that way you have a few to choose from and will have a better chance at getting a domain name that you will be happy with for a long time to come.

Q: What if .com for my domain is not available?

A: It is really OK. There are a lot of domains with .net or .org and even others like .us. Though as you get into some of the newer domain name extensions (.us, .info, .biz, .me) you will most likely get what your looking for. But a rule of thumb is to try for .com first, if that is not available then try .net and work your way from there to a domain that you will be satisfied with.

Q: I like this domain: iwantpeopletovisitmyhappydomain.com
A: Now lets think of the viewer, which is people visiting your very cool new website. Will they be able to remember the domain name simply? Is it on the you can easily say and roll off the tongue? If not then its probably best to try another domain that will be easier for people to remember. Because remember its all about visitors to your site, if they don't come then what is the point?

The ".com" stands for commercial and ".net" is for networks, ".gov" is government run websites, ".org" is for an orginization such as a charity, ".edu" is for an education facility. There are many more. These used to actually help categorize websites but without a way to make sure that only a commercial business got a ".com" it is a very loose system.

I hope that this helps you in your domain name choosing. Just remember to keep it simple and you will most likely come up with something that your visitors can remember and saves your tongue when try to say it in a hurry. =)

Good Luck
